GEAR UP stands for Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs. GEAR UP grants have been awarded to 47 states and three territories. Program services are specifically designed to support the middle school reform effort in each State. It is a federal program enacted as part of the 1998 Higher Education Act to give more low-income students the skills, encouragement, and preparation to enter and succeed in postsecondary education. Project activities aim to increase higher education by providing and increasing access to financial aid. - What do we do?
UH Manoa GEAR UP provides college visits, tutoring, advising, counseling, test preparation workshops, a student club, and other academic enrichment activities for students, teachers, and parents. - What we do for the Kalihi area schools?
UH Manoa GEAR UP is a collaboration between Kalakaua Middle School, Farrington High School, and the University of Hawaii at Manoa. UH Manoa GEAR UP services and activities are available to all current 8th graders in Kalakaua Middle School and 9th graders in Farrington High School. - Which students does UH Manoa GEAR UP target?
The first UH Manoa GEAR UP partnership cohort graduated in the year 2006. The second cohort are the current eighth graders of Kalakaua Middle School and current ninth graders of Farrington High School. - Who can be part of UH Manoa GEAR UP?
The UH Manoa GEAR UPprogram is designed to increase the number of students each year and guide them to enter and succeed in postsecondary education. GEAR UP grantees to serve an entire cohort of students beginning seventh grade year and follow the cohort through high school. - Is there a cost for UH Manoa GEAR UP Services?
No. Most services and activities are free. If in any case there will be a fee in the service that was offered, it will be noted in any sign-up materials.. - What are the goals of UH Manoa GEAR UP?
The goals of GEAR UP are to: Prepare students to access opportunities for post-secondary education. Ensure that parents value higher education, access resources, and support their children in pursuit of post-secondary education. Assure that teachers and staff are prepared and committed to mitigate the negative effects of poverty on students and their access to higher education. Establish a system to acknowledge academic achievement and to award financial assistance to GEAR UP students.

TAKE THE RIGHT CLASSES Start taking as many Math and English courses as possible. In order to qualify for admissions, most colleges require students to take a variety of courses in English and Math. You should also take Science, Social Science and Foreign Language courses.
