What is UH Manoa GEAR UP?

All parents want the best for their children, UH Manoa GEAR UP can help you to provide better opportunities for your child. GEAR UP stands for Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs. The program's main focus is to get your child thinking about college and helping them get there. UH Manoa GEAR UP provides your child with individualized tutoring, mentoring and counseling among many other services.

UH Manoa GEAR UP also helps you, the parent, to help your child on the road to college. College information and resources are provided to parents, and you will find support through GEAR UP's Family Association.

So how does my child qualify for the UH Manoa GEAR UP program? If your child is currently an 8th grader at Kalakaua Middle School or a 9th grader at Farrington High School, he or she is eligible to participate in the UH Manoa GEAR UP program.

Afterschool Mentoring

Among other things, UH GEAR UP Afterschool provides a safe place for students to learn about different languages and cultures.

Students at Kalakaua Middle School speak and practice a diverse number of languages and cultures.

In afterschool mentoring, students will read interesting stories about people from different cultures, thereby gaining a better understanding about themselves and their communities.

Banking on the captivating technologies utilized to develop the online Algebra I course, 22 eighth graders were selected to participate in a six-week Algebra Summer Institute. S.H.A.L.L - Studies of Heritage and Academic Languages and Literacies

Ilokano and Samoan language courses offer students the opportunity to develop complex and high-level language skills in their heritage languages. English and study skills courses allow for life long learning of English speaking, reading, writing, and computer technology skills through training students in analyzing the purposes and uses of language. These courses aim to enhance students’ self-esteem by changing the common view that heritage languages and cultures are problems to an orientation in which home languages and cultures are valued as resources of great academic and social value.
